He was for the first quater century of European settlemnt
the only gunsmith of south Carolina. His value to the colony was being
the only cabable of repairing their weapons. But his real profit
was in manufacture of Indian hatchets. Therefore the council
received many complaints that he was not repairing guns that
had been given to him for that propose. And he was ordered
to stop making Indian hatchets untis the repairs of guns were
completed. Archcraft ignored that edict and even the threat of
imprisonment evoked no response. He striked and even other forms
of persuasion of the council did not work. Finally his tools were
took away.
It was reported that he did not mended the guns or returned them as
ill or worse than when he received them. But no choice. He was the
only one.
